The Memorial High School Robotic Team
In 2002 ARC Specialties was contacted by SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers) to
assist Memorial High School with their rookie year of USFirst competition. The students
came up with a welded aluminum tube design, which meant they first had to learn to TIG
weld. They choose a 4-wheel drive system with a triple reduction chain drive to produce
enough force to move the 180 pound goals used in the 2002 game. An industrial strength
pneumatic gripper aka “The Jaws of Death” was designed and built to grab the goal. To
score points for the position of the goal and the position of the robot, a scissors type
arm aka “Child Gate From Hell” was built to reach out and touch the scoring area 18
feet away from the robot. Below are photos of the students building the robot at ARC
Specialties and competing at the Houston Regional event.
