Cold winding of heavy springs has always required a great deal of horsepower. In the past it also required a highly skilled operator to "chalk" the mandrel with a winding pattern then to follow that pattern. Arc Specialties has integrated motion control technology into a existing spring winding lathe to simplify the process. The spindle is powered by a 50 hp AC motor coupled to a variable frequency (speed) drive. The carriage is retrofit with a ball screw and brush less servo motor which is slaved to the spindle. Dead coils, pitch and length are all controlled by the computer based on operator input of the desired finals pring design. 99 spring winding schedules are stored in non volatile memory. This system was designed to wind 2 inch diameter stock into springs up to 14" outside diameter up to 48" long.
