THERMAL SPRAY of OILFIELD COMPONENTS for WEAR, FRICTION REDUCTION and CORROSION PROTECTION

This talk focuses on the use of thermal spray technology to solve wear and friction problems on downhole tubulars; including drill pipe, tubing and casing, and corrosion mitigation on certain components.

Typically, thermal spray processes are utilized for corrosion control, thermal protection, and shaft restoration.  The dominant process used in industry is High-Velocity Oxy-Fuel (HVOF) and variants thereof.

These applications range from aerospace to oil/chemical processing vessels. This talk focuses on the thermal spray variant known as arc spray or Twin Wire Arc Spray. Weld overlay is a well-known and popular solution for a great many applications.  However, thermal spray has the advantages of low heat input to the substrate that does not change the metallurgy of the part including introduction of weld-related stresses, distortion, etc. Thermal spray is also less expensive and faster to apply than weld overlay. This presentation will describe three specific oilfield problems and solutions using thermal spray.
