ESW is a variation of submerged arc welding. Both use granular flux for shielding. Both are older processes with unique advantages. Deoxidizers in the flux reduce oxides and produce superb welds. There is no visible arc, almost no smoke and extremely high deposition rates. ESW deposits up to 60 pounds of metal per hour, 10 times faster than MIG or TIG.
Today we showcase the strip version of ESW. If you are overlaying large areas you can’t beat ESW strip. Using 60mm wide strip we clad weld overlay 6 square feet per hour which would replace 10 TIG systems.
Why isn’t this the universal weld overlay solution? First is the challenge of using granular flux which limits the process to the flat position. Second, not all alloys are available in strip form. Third is lack of familiarity with the process and the need for special equipment. The ARC team can provide both the process knowledge as well as equipment.
ESW is also a great additive manufacturing technique as we show in the video.
At ARC Specialties we use robots and advanced servo motion control to precisely apply ESW overlay on complex parts which are otherwise impossible.
